Collaborating joyfully, building community
Nightingale encourages students to participate in, and later, lead, clubs that speak to their passions. In the Lower School, girls who participate in our afterschool program, Hobbyhorse, can choose from 12-15 activities each trimester that appeal to their interests, from cooking to swimming to robotics. In Middle School, collaboration and community serve as the basis for activities, and by Upper School, students are leading affinity groups, performance ensembles, and award-winning publications.
Lower School
After School activities for everyone
Hobbyhorse is Nightingale’s afterschool program offering exciting, out-of-the-box activities and courses each trimester across all grades in Lower School. In recycled-art robotics, students take on creative, open-ended problem solving while making cool, environmentally friendly art forms. From BeeBots to Scratch to LEGO Robotics, students become technical whizzes with the knowledge and skill to engineer amazing ideas into reality.

Middle School
Out of Uniform
Out of Uniform is a publication with original literature and art from Nightingale’s Middle School students. It has been awarded three gold crowns and one silver crown from Columbia Scholastic Press Association—a rare honor for a middle school publication. In a place that prizes and promotes individual voices, it is no surprise that Nightingale students have created celebrated works of self-expression.

Creative playtime
Students get to exercise independence and flex different muscles during Enrichment. Every day, scheduled “open time” gives them the creative freedom to relax, explore new interests, or seek extra help from teachers. Whether in independent pursuits in art, the Makerspace, the gym, or in quiet study labs, students have time to take a breath and personally enrich each day exactly as they choose.

Upper School
New literary heights
A Philomel is a poetic nightingale or a “lover of song.” It is also the Upper School literary journal, publishing top-notch student art, poetry, and prose. As one of the most acclaimed high school journals in the country, Philomel has won nine gold and five silver crown awards. Being the best in student literary journalism not only pushes artistic boundaries but encourages students to fly.

A club for every interest
Whether a student wants to be an admissions tour guide, work on a comedy routine, participate in a gospel choir, or brush up on finance, there is a club for it at Nightingale. Extracurricular clubs are entirely student-led, student-fueled, and open to all. The incredible breadth of activities speaks to a continued love of learning and holding space for true diversity and community.
